Surface Decoration
3 week work shop Wednesday Mornings Aug 12th - 26th 10-1pm
1 day work shop Thursday Aug 20th 10-1pm
3 week workshop:
It will be helpful if you have some previous experience with glazing although not necessary.
This workshop will explore a variety of surface decoration techniques. Each participant will be provided 4 leather hard cylinders to practice on.
In the first 2 classes we will explore different techniques one can use on greenware:
Sgraffito
stencilling
mishima / inlay
carving
In the third class we will be glazing! We will start with the foundations single dips and setting yourself up for success when glazing but will then explore beyond the single dip:
layering glazes
using wax
masking
painting on glazes
One day workshop:
No previous experience needed for the one day workshop
In this one day version of the workshop we will introduce masking and sgraffito techniques using underglazes. These techniques can be used to add imagery, illustrations, patterns and visual texture to leatherhard pieces. I will provide you 2 tumblers, demo the techniques and then support you in exploring these techniques on your tumblers which will then be fired and glazed with a clear glaze for you to pick up at a later date.
